Some old WW2 props

Hello,

We recently found some beautiful props but are having trouble identifying them... can anyone help? I'm pretty sure the three prop is a 6339A-12 Hamilton standard (not sure what planes they were flown on) but the large two prop has absolutely no markings... not sure if there's anyone who can tell just by shape but thought I would ask!

Hi Toby, you are right on two of the props being of Hamilton Std origin; they could, of course be de Havilland licence built props, too. The two blade prop is possibly a HamStd 12D30 counterweight prop with the three blader with the hub halves and serparate blades being 23E50 by the looks of things. The complete three blader, I suspect is not and is most likely post war. To find the part numbers you need to take a good look at them. The HamStd part numbers will be on the hub halves of both of them, have a look around the base of the half with the spider in it and the big crack, or around the blade openings. Look on the other hub half in similar locations. The blade openings should also be numbered. The part number for the big blades will be on the circumfrence of the butt, you might want to take the covers off them. The two metal rings around the blade shanks are the bearing races and should be loose. The same with the two blader, you should find a number around the hub somewhere. As for the prop with the spinner fitted, it's from a later aircraft and it looks like a Hartzell prop, although it could be McCauley; the only way to find out is to grab a screw driver and take the spinner off and look on the hub for a part number.

Part numbers won't tell you exactly which aeroplane they are off, but knowing what they are can help enormously; as I said though, the two blader and dismantled three blader are HamStd props. Good luck with your investigation.

The 2 blader looks like a Harvard prop, but a part number would confirm or deny.

Thanks! Let me take a look today and I will see what I find. Along one of the three prop HS blade I found a very faded stamping - 6339 so I'm pretty sure that is off a Lookheed Loadstar. I'll take a look at the hubs today for more info though.

OK so I had a look at the collars and the 3 prop is a 6339A-12A which was flown on the Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar. The two HS bladed propeller I'm still unsure of. I got one half of the hub casing off but couldn't manage the second half. here's the various inscriptions that we found:
Blades: MT88, MT42, OGSX - 1/2, T12599, SHANK 56151, AE3469, 2596D, H
Hub: M8077, W24064, S8402-2AF

I've searched about but can't find any info online... could anyone shed some light?

Found it! The 2 blade is of The Harvard (or one of it's many variants). An advanced trainer fighter plane from WWII. THANKS Nuuuumann and A4K. I enjoyed the hunt so much I'm now dissappointed its over - best get on and start polishing them

The three blade HamStd is a very commonly used prop; I worked on a pair of these from a DC-3 once.

Thanks Nuuumannn, I took the spinner off but there wasn't much of a hub. I spoke with someone who's in the know and they are convinced its from a prototype post war plane. I'll see if I can find some numbers on that. Can't wait to restore the three prop - it looks sublime
