Really. Well it took me along time to get that lucky (aound 40 goes).. otherwise is was crash burn before I even got close. And whats hard about flying a plane with a dead engine? came down on him from 500m advantage, around 500kph. the impact was shown at 1/2 speed. mayve 380-400kph. Search youtube. Lots of footage of 'shotup planes' still flying.. albeit not that well.

Edit seems my whole post previous was missing.. I will buy that book mentioned.

Damage modelling has always been a farce with IL2, the programme simply does not account for a wide enough range of conditions, one minute you lose a wing to a single 20mm hit the next you take multiplre hits and fly home with huge holes in the wings, and the plane flies and still maneuvers!
last Sunday I was on the WOP server and got into a brawl with a flight of Hurricane 11c's in a 109F1, shot down one then got seriously hit, oil on the windscreen, engine squealing, lost one aileron and the rudder cables, yet still shot down the one I was chasing and outmaneuvered the last one and flew from Hastings to Abbevile and made a successful landing!

and thats not the first time I have limped back with what would in reality be a dead plane, IL2 is a good fun game but some of it is just silly, like the uber sniper rear gunners on bombers!

well get better patches, and some damage and AI mods.. problem solved. Also, again youtube and see wings getting blown off with single hits, B-17 flying with most of the tail gone.. etc, no difference then the game. As for the snipers sometime I can fly and not take a single hit.. other times just on the approach BANG! one hit, dead engine lol. I usually fly with 64 a/c flying around.. so my odds of not dying just improved ;).

Yesterday I successfully crash landed w/o elevators, just rudder, aileron, throttle.. not easy to do!

Anyways, this video isn't suspose to be about IL-2 gameplay. But merely a mention of an often forgoten about Luftwaffe wing. I hope at least you enjoyed watching it.

These young people were more brave than the highly skilled experten .... Hartman knew how to survive a combat mission even in 45 . They had notning .... Hajo Hermann lived 100 years... he had the idea but did not lead them ....
So much for the "isolated "insidences about americans shooting parachutes. In every combat history of 44/45 there are german pilots shot in their parachutes...

Of course! Playing dead and falling from 20000ft to 4000ft before pulling the cord takes some seriously huge balls. Theo Nau's commander told his pilots to wait to pull the rip cord until one could tell a horse from a cow! Has to be a reason for that, right? The Luftwaffe pilots knew what would happen in 44/45 hanging from their chutes. 1000+ bombers 1000+ fighters spread over 107km with only 180 Me 109's a few Me 262's flying top cover to intercept, 10:1, I'm surprised any survived at all let alone made it to there targets!

Such a sad tragic tale of futile waste desperation.
A few tens of allied bombers and a handful of fighters downed (and all the human misery that entailed on one side) at the 'price' of so many more young German men.
Talk about a generation lost 'to the meat grinder'.

Yes, a waste for sure. I can guess at their reasoning though, to shoot down a bomber takes time, to ramm a bomber dosn't take no where as much time. With the hundreds of bombers and escorts, and massively outnumbered, one can see the logic of it imo.

They were dumb as rocks not brave and as for the shooting down guys in chutes that worked 2 ways but the German nation trumped it by placing a number of captured aircrew in concentration camps

Don't confuse These brave Luftwaffe pilots for those 'devine wind' guys.. as the Luftwaffe pilots had ZERO desire to die, but to live on a fight another day.

Can`t think of one pilot with any brains crashing delibrately into another aircraft delibrately unless there were no options , like your femoral artory was severed or your controls froze its a losers or fanatics game

I think the level of vindictiveness varied from individual to individual. After all, the pilots, on both sides, were just human. I think, though, that it is accurate to say that the vast majority of Luftwaffe pilots were flying not as a way of expressing any love for the Nazi regime, but were merely doing what was required of them by a government that demanded so much.

Any pilot with any intelligence knows his chances of even surviving the impact of a deliberate mid air collision is not good, and his chances of bailing out afterward in a damaged out of control aircraft isn't good either. I don't think these young pilots were dumb, nor do I think Kamakazi pilots were dumb. They didn't have all the luxury of access to all the information we now do, they had no idea how futile things were, they were living in desperate times.

The people that thought up such schemes that, of course, someone else had to do, are the idiots and criminals.

We should notice there were many ramming incidences during the war from varius nationalities. German and japanese , Russians l, a greek PZL 24 against an italian bomber over Thessaloniki ,

thanks for the information
