...between the usual suspects - UK and Nazi Germany.
For the sake of discussion, Messerschmitt develops a big fighter, along the lines of Hurricane, for second half of 1930s, and wins the RLM contract. Focke Wulf develops a not so big fighter along the lines of Spitfire just after that (RLM wants a second iron in fire this time, earlier than historically) with peculiar wing ribs and whole wing. They are powered by German V12 engines of the day, use German guns, radios, gauges, fuel etc. Both designs are in production and use as their historical counterparts we know well.
In the UK, Hawker develops a fighter that is very similar to Bf 109, powered by British V12 engines of the day. Supermarine, after the debacle with Type 224, takes a bit more time here, and comes out with Fw 190-lookalike, powered by Hercules engine of the day (prototype in late 1939, service by mid-1941, unless there is a plausible way to improve the timing - no problematic BMW 139 here). The two aircraft use British-made guns, radios, gauges, fuel etc. Obviously, the 'British Bf 109' is the only 1-engined day fighter for the BoB (bar Defiant, Gladiator and similar types of questionable utility).
Other fighter types, or aircraft modified into fighters (Bf 110, Whirlwind, Beufighter, Mosquito, Typhoon etc) are just as they were historically so - no major change here. No Fw 187 in service, the He 112 remains as it was, no different Gloster monoplanes or Miles in service etc.
What country might be better off, and what possible developments we might see in the category of aircraft designed as fighters for the later years of ww2? Possible/plausible development of the 4 types featured here?
