FIFTY years ago today, the Soviet Union announced that it had shot down an American U-2 spy plane and that its pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was alive.

I was hoping to read more about Powers, personally, but I have to say it'll be sad to hear the old girl is finally gone. That bird has had one long and distinguished career!
