Yep, it's the data transfer cable - bought it just for that.

I see. But it can the the reason for the trouble. Do you have the old one? May be it should be used instead of the new one. If you had used it before with the laptop the Windows should have saved the settings for that and all should work when you connecting the devices together later again.

My original card reader was in my camera bag, which was stolen in December 2017. I replaced all equipment except the card reader, as it wasn't being used.

I'm beginning to think it is a problem with the usb ports on my PC, as the port where the broadband dongle connects has started to disconnect occasionally, if the connecting cable is disturbed.
Also, I have successfully downloaded pics direct from my cameras fairly recently, so I doubt the problem is support ending on Win 10.
I'll check things via my laptop when I'm back in Norfolk next week, and if that works, then I'll know it's my PC at fault and will have it checked or even replaced.

No, it's further south and west of where we were.

I'm back !

My apologies for the extended delay in posting the coverage of our tour of Normandy battlefields back in June this year.
I've been having a shed load of problems downloading the photos from my camera and 'phone, both to the PC and lap top - at first, neither device was recognising the camera/'phone, then I eventually had what seemed some success using a card reader, only to discover that no images were found on the SD cards, even though they were definitely present !
Very strange and annoying, considering I've had no similar problems with this over the past 20 years or so.

However, I have now made some progress at long last, successfully transferring the camera images to the PC, although they have downloaded in a slightly haphazard sequence, and refuse all attempts to be collected into a single folder (I have yet to find the patience to tackle the 'phone photos) !
I'm aiming to commence selection and editing etc over the next couple of days, and will start posting coverage of what turned out to be a fantastic tour of WW2 sites, in extremely hot weather.

Watch this space ....................
