Very smoky and scary up here. We are back to fires -- they are new, they are growing and they are close. Fires 10 miles north, and 5 miles west. Some sizeable evacuations but they are all a bit north of us. Big fires 75 miles south in Spokane Washington. Airplanes and helicopters all over. At least it's cooler today but the wind is howling -- not a good thing at times like this.

It's been averaging 105° (40.5C) or more daily and looks to continue like this through the next week.
Last week, it peaked at 113° (45C) and with that high temp came the smoke drifting down out of the north and blanketed the area.

Sorry to hear. Not only is that hot but the fires seem to have exploded over the past few years.

We have been extremely fortunate this year and the going joke is "everyone is leaving California, even the fires".
Joking aside, the Redding area has always been known for it extreme heat, but with low humidity, it's really not that bad - you have to make sure to stay hydrated, though.

My uncle worked as a custodian at a college there. We used to come down on summer vacation to visit. Almost got a ticket from CHP there on my way to Oakland when I shipped out to Guam. Ah fond memories.

Yep, that's us. It smells like a badly run campground outside, but my town does not have any alerts happening even though the fires around us are still burning. What remains frightening is how suddenly and how fast these things can blow up and become all consuming monsters. There's one eating houses near Kelowna B C that gave people literally minutes to get out. Scary stuff...

Got up to 95F today, according to the local airport AWOS. Relaxing on the back porch with a book was not feasible because the wind was out of the west and as a result the usual cooling sea breeze was not present. But around 1700 we unexpectedly received a blessing in the form of a mild thunderstorm that cooled things off and provided a small amount of rain.
We've been having temperatures near triple digits (38 C) with low humidity, 8% or so and plenty of range fires: two just north of Reno that will probably combine into one of about 60,000 acres (27,000+ HA) and there are still some just north east of Las Vegas (aka Lost Wages)but yesterday we had a real frog strangling gully washer of a rainstorm. It only lasted a couple of hours and dropped 1-2" (2.5-5 cm)but the wind was gusting way past 50mph (80kph). Living in the mountains, particularly in the desert, that means flash floods and/orsheet flooding. Driving back from the store (completely soaked) the streets were virtual rivers and fast moving at that. A few minutes into the storm and the water was up to the floorboards of my truck at some intersections. We went from heat warnings to flood/flash flood warnings in an hour.

Has cooled down and we have gotten some rain which we need due to a huge forest fire nearby.
Update on Nevada fires near me.
While our problems seem minor compared to the terrible catastrophes hitting the mid-west and east they are severe to us. I don't mean to minimize what anyone else is going through!
"Bug" fire now at 71,700+ ac (32,600ha) and 4% contained.
"Stallion" fire at 34k ac (15,500ha) zero % contained.
US Hwy 395, the road north from Reno to CA and points north is closed.
An unknown number of homes/buildings destroyed and folks evacuated.
