A friend (who recently passed) and I used to fly from Redding's Benton airfield (O85) to Red Bluff (RBL) just to have lunch at Valeigh's airpark cafe.

It was always worth the expense.

That is one place I have stopped at!
Our friend was getting married at Jack's Peak Park in Monterey.
I picked up my sister and husband and a 3 year old in Yakima (YKM) in the 310, and off we went IFR that morning to attend, 607NM away.
We started out in the clear but were solid on the descent out of about 11K. It was cold and we picked up some quick mixed ice, as I got vectors for the DME arc. I had not flown one in anger before. Wife was asking about that ice. LOL it will come off soon. I knew the temps were quite warm below. It departed as quickly as it came on with a little staccato on the side of the nose from the props.
We got in, and fueled up and had a late breakfast there. I taxied back out and was on hold for an arrival, and out of the clag comes this San Juan Airlines Beech 99, LOL.
They had been sold and broken up. My dear friend and instructor of all ratings flew the 99 for them for a few years.
I get up and on center frequency in solid IFR @7K or so. This familiar voice says "hi guy" on center. WTF?
I had to listen a few but I figured it out. It was another instructor friend Roy, flying commuter around the area. He was up and down and we parted ways with a "bye Guy" as we left his frequency.
Anyway, we were firmly esconced in cloud the whole way from there to Monterey. The only thing I saw was opposite direction traffic, a C130 above us in a hole between layers.
We were late and had to hustle but made the wedding.
On the way home it was nicer weather and I had that 3 year old standing in my lap and operating the yoke for a moment, much to the alarm of his father in the back seat. Lighten up Francis!
It was lovely and we flew right up the Oregon Cascades and saw our reflection in Crater Lake as we passed overhead.

Today, I am packing up for our house move, first for 14 years. I had to take a couple of hours to play with my genuine DB 603 fuel injection pump that is getting packed away.
I got it laid in the sunshine for an hour or two to get warm and then I primed the fuel return line with oil and turned the drive coupling. Great, all in good order, you hear each pumping element gurgle with the oil as it pumps and bypasses the oil from inside each pumping cylinder. Sorry, but this is the sad side of a mechanical obsession! However, I suspect that this is one of the very few remaining DB 603 injection pumps in the World that remains in a serviceable condition with its seals intact. I keep it filled with oil for preservation and I doubt that anyone else on the planet did this today!

Kindergarten was interesting. I had this kid attack me (a little shorter than my 9 year old) demanding he be allowed to log on to a computer. I told him to get his hands of me. He grabbed his backpack and said he was going home. I told him bye and see you tomorrow. He said he was getting his mom. I said, "Great. See you tomorrow". The office brought him back and he was a pain all four hours there. Then I went to get my check from HR which was really nice. Hot as hell out today.

A bit early for a hamburger at 0630! It was just a pleasant little local hop to continue to confirm that the new Pitot-Static installation is working Okay before getting the new ADSB transponder calibrated.

Went for a ride in a my friend's new Tesla Model Y. I can tell you that the "Autopilot" system is far more advanced than merely hold lanes on a highway. It literally has a "Hands Off" capability and is capable of not only driving to an exact destination via GPS guidance but also recognizing and responding properly to traffic lights, stop signs, and other vehicles. My friend said that earlier today there was a dead raccoon in the road and the car even avoided that! He asserts that the car can drive itself better than a human being can, including making decisions as to when it is safe to pull out into traffic. He thinks that reading a book or even taking a nap while on a trip is entirely feasible. The car's responses were both crisp and smooth. The passenger seat had as much room and comfort as a LazBoy Chair; you could stretch right out.

The car even has a "come to me" feature where if you are in a parking lot you can signal it via a cellphone and it will pull out of a parking spot and drive over to where you are, like the Lone Ranger's horse or the Batmobile.

It was odd to be riding in a car that had a completely blank dash instead of an instrument panel, with what appeared to be a 13 inch TV set mounted in the middle of it that displayed all the information and even advised that the 7.5 mph headwind would reduce the range by 1%.

Never too early for a good burger. Working 3rds and eating different meals at odd hours gets some oddball looks at times. Nothing quite like having a smoking hot plate of enchiladas and refried beans with a cold beer at 7:30 in the morning!

It was wet yesterday so we turned from welding handrail outside

to building wood rail inside.

Toe board in VG fir.

5/4 x 2 handrail, plowed 1/4" deep for 5/4 balusters. Screwed and plugged or glued and finish nailed or all of the above.

For a Tesla I think that would be very hard to do because it depends on GPS and map data to identify routes. It would not try to drive through a fake tunnel because a fake would not be in the map database.

Many years ago I recall hearing of someone following GPS instructions in Europe - instructions rather than a detailed map - and as a result exited the road, drove around a tight turn and ended up in a river. You were supposed to wait for a ferry there; there was no bridge.

Supposedly several years ago two women drove to a hike in Maine and had to call 911 because their GPS got them lost. How that can happen I do not know. but I can recall looking at a GPS For Dummies unit and seeing it depicting me driving through a pine forest; the roads had changed. The police responded and helped the women but a hour of so later they called 9111 again. They were out in the ocean; they had driven off a cliff and their car was sinking. Really tragic aspect was that they had a dog with them.

I ran our Hurricane Merlin 29 yesterday. Didn't take pics because I was kinda busy!

Here are a couple of screen grabs from a 7 minute video of me on the Merlin 29 as referenced above. Yes, that's a wooden base because this test stand is temporary. Total run time on this stand was just 9 hours and the engine is running well. Next week we start the process of putting the engine back into the Hurricane.

Took the kids to the Mil-Town. I couldn't find a kit T Hobbytown USA, but the kids all found stuff they wanted. Lunch at Red Robin and then went to book store. Again, my kids all found something they wanted. I did as well. The teachers discount saved me $13.00. Came home and finished priming the resin kids. Then started painting the Hellcat drones again. The paint finally arrived!

My brother fitted the balusters and blocking today

I put the long rails on my saw

So I could dice up some laminated MDF for a custom vanity for the basement bathroom.

I had some solid Corian style countertop salvage and I cut he heavy Kraus bar sink into it.

This is a combo bath sink and utility sink and that deep stainless sink did the needful.
