Well, I'm only halfway through the book, but while he's characterized as an alcoholic and rowdy, and was, he was usually sober and was generally a pleasant guy to be around.

Currently reading 'Quartered Safe Out Here', by George MacDonald Fraser.
Outstanding read, covering the last months of the war in Burma from the Battle for Miektila to Rangoon by a young (just 19) Scottish private. He was fortunate enough to be assigned to a very experienced section, who happily took him in. Descriptions of battle, camaraderie and landscapes are excellent.
