This is what scares me as I close in on the "empty nest" phase.I think the saying is "If you retire , you expire". It means find something to do where you continue to interact with others.

Bingo!! I worked for several years in a nursing home and we had classes in aged care which included fitness etc.Keep physically active - no need to run ultra-marathons or become a body builder, just do something every day, ideally outdoors, to maintain muscle mass, stamina, and balance.

Ahh, so no Arnhem plans this year?Just finished organising a second trip to Normandy for Karl and I, to continue our battlefields tour where we left off last year (see "The Travels of Tel's Tin Tent" thread).
Ferry booked and paid for, Portsmouth to Ouistreham, departing 21st June, returning 27th June, and booked the same hotel again at Benouville (Le Port) for six nights.
Just need to confirm a hotel for the night before sailing, then start planning our tour itinerary.
If anyone is interested in joining us, let me know.
Ah, no problem, I was just a bit surprised. Hope you guys have a great time.It was a tough decision Marcel, with a number of things to consider, including mutually suitable dates (Karl is having his 30th wedding anniversary holiday in Paris, for example) along with finances etc..
There was a lot that we didn't get to cover last year, so Normandy sort of won, and we'll also be able to visit another place on the way, at the Tank Museum at Bovington in Dorset. Visiting this Museum would have required at least a long weekend, due to the distance involved, but with a slight diversion en route to the ferry at Portsmouth, we can cross off this from our "places to visit" list without needing further time off work for Karl.
However, we both still want to do the drive of XXX Corps from "Joe's Bridge" to Arnhem, and meet up with you and Sander, so, given my mobility and general health allows, I'm looking at next year.
The park where my caravan is located, in Norfolk, is closing down at the end of this season, as the owners are retiring and, although this is disappointing for me, it will release extra funds for next year, as I wont have the expenses of pitch fees, travelling etc, and will sell my caravan. This will go a long way to provide funds over and above "normal" for an extended tour to Arnhem and other relevant sites.
What cheered my wife and me is our son's successful surgery to remove a 3.5 cm meningioma tumor from the front left portion of his brain. It was discovered by CT scan when he had a very strange and bad headache. He was operated on by a terrific neurosurgeon at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Surgery was on Friday and today he's out taking walks, playing piano and has his sharp sense of humor. It was attached to the carotid artery, but they were able to handle it with no complications. It did not affect his left optic nerve. My son is a wonderful ophthalmologist and we were concerned that it would affect his skills. So far it has not. We are very cheered indeed!
If there is room for a non-driving kiwi to tag along Terry, I will try to make that trip. However, we both still want to do the drive of XXX Corps from "Joe's Bridge" to Arnhem, and meet up with you and Sander, so, given my mobility and general health allows, I'm looking at next year.
