Much assisted by the poor resolution of my iPhone camera too The strokes are really only visible up close, but then they look awful. Thanks for the kind words guys, hoping to get the Hurri done by the weekend, then see the Skyhawk off and move on to my Dornier for the GB...
 
Just remember BT, we only see what you show us. Thats how I think when im taking my final pictures . If your going for the best look work aorund your flaws but if you need help take pics of areas that you messed up on. I usually post where I messed up because criticism only feeds me, nothing will ever be perfect.
 
Looks OK to me BT. If you give it a rub over with a damp cloth, you'll be surprised how some of the brush marks disappear, and when you gloss coat it, then matt coat, they'll hardly show at all.
 
Now that looks like VERY nice work! Do you know if the construction of the model's wing is following the full-size pattern, or whether it has had to be adapted? Either way, excellent workmanship. Looking forward to seeing the progress on this one.

Well, the Hurricane was going well until this happened...



The red centre dot is is well and truly stuck on the blue band (I think I must have tried to do other side too soon after doing this one, and knocked this red part out of place while handling the model) and I can't move the thing at all

So, can anyone suggest the best paint matches for the blue and red? I think I will buy them and attempt to repair the damage by hand-painting.

Use a brush and warm water.Apply the water with the brush and do it a couple of time untill you can move the red dot with the brush to a correct position.
Don't worry if the dot can unstick.Get the red one on the brush end and put it to a bowl with water.Then take a piece of the paper decal where is some decal glue and put there a drop of water ,then try to gather as much of the diluted glue as possible.Then apply on the place where the red dot has to be, and then the dot with the brush.
 
Ah, actually found a decent paint match for both colours by accident while sifting through my old Citadel Miniatures paint collection. I'm very impressed with them, some of them have been open for over ten years and they still work great with just a little shake and stir 8)
 
Ah, we must have posted at the same time Wojtek. I did try both water and microsol but couldn't get the thing to move at all. I have painted over it now, so I will have to hand paint a repair. Just as well I enjoy a challenge 8)
 
It's a 1/4 scale SPAD XIII. The kit (by Balsa USA) is what they call "stand-off scale" meaning it closely resembles the real-deal from a certain distance with one eye closed. The wing has a taller airfoil than scale to make it an easy flyer. I left that alone. I like easy flying planes. There are the same number of ribs as the real airplane with identical scalloping to the T/E. Otherwise all the details that bring it closer to scale can be rendered. All the strut work, flying and landing wires, guns, panels, etc on a model this size can be re-created in scale without much trouble or added weight. That's all over the CG anyway. In the meantime I ordered the Revell 1/28th scale SPAD XIII to build as a guide for the look of the airplane. The wings are near the end of the preliminary build. The fuse comes next and at a certain build point I have to fit both wings to the fuse to check incidences and alignments and set the cabanes and inter-plane struts. So far I haven't bashed the kit much but that'll change once I get to the cabanes, struts and associated wires. That will be the s-l-o-w part of the build.

Thanks for taking a look. I'll keep a pic-record of the build. Still undecided who's crate it will be marked as. Any favorites?
 
Thanks for the info Sweb. It's beautiful work you're doing there, and it should look really nice when finished. I understand what you mean by 'stand-off' scale, and realise that with some designs, true scale would either be impossible, or a real handful to fly. I can't really suggest any colour scheme, as it's not an area of aviation history that I'm well versed in, but obviously Eddie Rickenbakker comes to mind - or is that one too common?
Really looking forward to seeing the build progress.

I'll probably go American - Rickenbacker or Luke - because they were colorful. After the war Reed Chambers painted his crate with the stars and bars but that's a bit over the top. Most, if not all of those guys have been forgotten now and vanished into the pages of aviation history. These days I can mention Rickenbacker in aviation circles and youngsters don't know it. Mention Charles Nungessor and get a vacuous look. Mick Mannock, Rene Fonck, Billy Bishop, Lufberry, Richtofen, Voss, others...forgotten. Crap, now I'm all reminiscent about the earlier gun fighters. Will have to remedy that.
