Actually, I'm not deliberately working on them all at the same time, just things get halted with one project for paint, so I do something on another, and so it goes 'til I get sick of unfinished bits and break out the airbrush.

My next build, continuing with Planes at Midway, is a vintage Monogram TBD Devastator. I'm currently working on the interior and canopy masking, but I'm finding reliable resources for paint schemes to be very scant. Because the TBD was phased out so quickly—and because BuAer guidelines seemed to change constantly during its six months of active service—wartime photos are rare. I'm planning on painting using LCDR Waldron's markings.
Some photos show the exposed wing ribs in Insignia White, while others show Blue-Gray. Even other model builds vary, with some hobbyists opting for Zinc Chromate Green. The attached photo is from a John Ford film and looks as authentic as it gets. By the time of Midway, some sources say the "T" [unit identifier] was ordered to be removed.
Notice the lack of a clear demarcation line on the leading edge between the upper blue and the Insignia White. It looks as though the transition from peacetime "Yellow Wings" to wartime camouflage was done hurriedly in the field. Any fine stenciling, like "Hatch" or "Fuel," appears to have been simply painted over. Even the torpedo looks like a grimy Insignia White, stained by bomb carts and greasy handling. It feels like there's no "wrong" way to do this! Any suggestions are welcome. After this one, a Hasegawa Val I purchased on eBay, for $17, I think a bargain.

That's a bargain. Even the standard one on there tends to run to a little under $30 to over $30.

I think I got lucky. The seller was mega ebayer, not a hobbiest/collector. I made a stupid low Make Offer, and we met at $17.

Yeah. Our local model shop has a Shelf of Doom in the back room where used kits can be had. I make a monthly pilgrimage to see if anything exciting turns up.I would like to, but not now...
