Back at the end of February a Killdeer began a nest in my driveway.

The nest is 18 inches to the right of the padded marker, approximately between her and the marker. At this point, March 4, she had one egg.

She is trying to intimidate me. With the cat, she leads her on a merry chase in circles.

The second egg arrival

She is on the nest, now with four eggs and after several bouts with severe cold and windy, rainy weather. My cats know to leave her alone, "she's mine".

A week ago she abandoned the nest and since she has not appeared, her eggs are today an Easter decoration.

Very similar in nature to our Aussie Plovers, can be very vicious, have no fear and will nest on a rock if need be but always out in the open and working in pairs in defense of the nest, one of them acting as a decoy.

Last month this fellow came in my shop and on to my workbench. I put him outside and the next day he was back. He apparently sleeps in the day time and moves at night. Since I thought there might be more than one, I put a dot on his shell but it was him so I named him Herman. After the fourth time finding him asleep among tools and parts, I moved him to a distant flower bed and with the warmer weather he has not returned.
