Did anyone watch the opening ceremony for this year's summer games?

I'd be interested in what others thought.

Glad I wasn't the only one. The Guardian newspaper described it as something like, "not just the worst Olympic opening ceremony, but possibly the worst public event of all time".

Bizarrely, some news outlets were heaping praise on it. That in itself is weird. It was so bad I might even watch it again.

I only saw a few minutes when they have the Metal Band thrashing one platforms out of the windows of whatever building it was and all the other windows were filled headless mannequins. That was enough for me. I also am sick of cutting away to all the celebrities in the audience at events, who cares.
Snoop Dogg was hilarious last night as he did a mock commentary on the Badminton tournament...

The 2012 London Olympics opening ceremonies where the Queen parachuted into the the stadium and Eric Idle sang "Always look on the Bright side of Life" was far more entertaining IMO.

Why are you commenting so badly about the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris? What got on your nerves? The French show was outstanding and diverse despite the rain. Please be a little more tolerant! I thought you English people were role models for this.

When it comes to tolerance, please advise how you know posts here are by "English people"? For myself, I used to watch opening ceremonies but at that time there were only 3 channels in UK. They have got longer and more ridiculous at every games, I dont have the time or the inclination to sit through hours of symbolic nonsense, just get on with the sport, and "sport" isnt pictures of Tom Cruise and Ed Sheeran watching gymnastics, BTW.

Who the f... are you to tell me to be more tolerant, more diverse (what T.F.) or more not of myself. Be what you wanna be - I don't care! I am what I am and I hate the opening and the closing of this Olympics. Suit yourself but don't tell me what to be!
And for the protocol: I'm a Canadian!

Didn't watch; not into sports that require judging to determine a winner
If you remove the national flags and medals table you are left in most cases with people doing strange things, usually on or with very expensive pieces of equipment or even more expensive horses. The UK won 65 medals I believe, most of them sat down and a lot of them facing backwards, thats "sport" folks. Personally I cant wait to see if "we" repeat gold in USA in the 3 meter mens synchronised diving, which had the whole world green with envy. Go on, admit it, you really were. :D

Judging? No judging required in athletics: just the clock or the measuring tape. Fastest, highest, longest. Cycling too. And shooting and archery. Then football, golf, tennis. In fact there aren't many that need a judge. You missed an awful lot.

But the opening and closing ceremonies were garbage. Despite being in her 80's, my mother used a swear to describe the closing ceremony.

And the pompous idiots will tell you that if you thought it was garbage, you didn't 'get' it. Now that is arrogant gaslighting at its best.

Thankfully, the games in between were (for me at least), a triumph.

You think that cycling football golf and tennis dont need a judge> Even athletics has judges, a UK athlete was reinstated after being tripped in a heat for example. A Dutch cyclist was excluded after head butting a UK competitor mid race.

I have an idea that will make golf fun.
Skip the golf clubs and switch to mortars.
No let the public vote what landmine or claymore goes off.
Punters can set money on one mine like in roulette. If it blows up the golfball thats when you get paid.

I name it the "Wheel of Explosion" 'Rien ne va plus de explosive.

Next season i will add a sniper with a paintball gun. I will name it; 3rd Golf war. Road to Bagdad.

See.... its so easy to get golf interesting.
