It's a BIG ass boat that became a submarine with the help of the US Navy (unsinkable my ass). So now you know!
Only the early models had down ejection. That was fairly quickly changed due in large to most ejections happening on take off or landing. It was not much of a glider. The approach speeds were around 160knots. It had boundary layer bleed air. Which was air tapped from the compressor side of the engine and blown across the wing to augment airflow. Without that, the approach speeds were above 200 knots. So touch down in normal ops would be about 150ish knots, or about 175 miles per hour.
And because the plane was so fast, the ejection seat exited the pilot out of the bottom of the plane. Obviously, not an option when landing.
Much respect for the Starfighter driver.
I would like to add to this information that the model for the Italian F-104s was the MB. IQ-7A similar to the German one, but with the trapezoidal headrestThe Ejection Site: F-104 Ejection Seats
