Great Story on Japanese Surrender markings. From "Vintage wings of Canada".

Green Cross to Bear > Vintage Wings of Canada

That was excellent, I would love to know the viewpoints of the pilots/crew that flew the surrender party.

Yet another good article from that group. VWOC has one of the best sites in the business and posts regular interesting articles like this one. Worth signing up for the newsletter and it's free.

Great link! Fantastic photos too.

Yes, it's black when you see black-look so-called "green cross" in your historical color photos.

A friend of mine confirmed it on an actual Zero fighter relic more than ten years ago. He said clearly "It was black".
It makes sense when it was black,
1. It could have shown condolences for the defeated ally Germany.
2. No pilots wanted to fly such loser's aircraft without Hinomaru but German-look ones.
Remember those Japanese delegates for the surrender signing on the USS Missouri on Sept 2 were not top-class Generals.
They tried to avoid dishonorable roles as much as possible.
3. IJN/IJA guys were not necessarily so obedient as the allied expected.

Regards,

We have a proverb "Say white for black or black for white when you may get involved in trouble".
My guess for these ten years about the green cross is -

The allied order was green.
Ground crew painted in black.
Pilot said it "What a beautiful green!"
Not so much different.
I think you may trust your color photo technology.

Either way, this is a great looking model. I like the pains you took to get the anti glare panel just right!
