I worked on the F-105, but now I look at that airplane and "What Were We Thinking?" comes to mind. That huge fuselage and tiny wings..... and that weird shaped hatch in front of the bomb bay you had to squeeze through to reach the auxiliary fuel tank pressure regulator.

Nuclear weapons delivery systems! That what they were thinking. One way supersonic weapons delivery system. On the bright side (no pun intended) we never had to use it for its intended purpose.

If you haven't got it, can I suggest Conflict over the Bay by Norman Franks. Its basically the same story but from the UK's perspective and the two together make for an interesting comparison.

A week ago I ordered a 2nd hand copy, waiting for delivery. Good to know is good, albeit at 9 euros including shipping wouldn't be a waste anyhow.
