I am pretty sure he rotated early to try and avoid hitting the land, a guess but had he kept low instead of what looked like a steep climb off the water he might just have got away with it.
 
The windsock is clearly indicating a crosswind component from the right. Had he lined himself up properly and powered out of the lake from left-to-right he would be near the right bank of the water strip when he came on-step with plenty enough distance to achieve safe altitude. He was either inexperienced, or worse, a hotdog.
 
We can all see what he was doing wrong but obviously he couldn't. I'm not sure what was going through the guy's head, but whatever it was, put his family in grave danger.
