Machine-gun post, France, during World War I. Two machine gunners are preparing to target an enemy aeroplane.
The main gunner is sighting and aligning the Vickers machine gun, while his partner is using a telescope to spot the plane.
The larger box to the right of the gun would have held ammunition, the smaller case would have carried spare parts...
This photograph, attributed to John Warwick Brooke, shows interesting detail of the gun emplacement, made of earth
revetted with brushwood...

The machine gun seen here has been set up at the opening to a barn. Two men sit directly behind it and one man kneels
in the background. A fourth man can also be seen off to the right. The machine guns used during World War I required
more than one man to operate them, usually a team of between two and six. Initially heavy and rather cumbersome,
as the war progressed it became clear that a light-weight machine gun capable of being carried by one person was
required. The Lewis machine gun, first made available to the army in 1915, fitted the bill. It could be carried by one man,
but still required a second man to load the magazines...In a machine gun crew each man had a specific role to play.
For example, in a crew of three one man would fire the gun, a second man would feed the ammunition through the gun
and a third would supply the ammunition to the second...
