Who was the opposition to III./StG 1 in the early hours (04:26) of September 1st 1939 at Tczew?

Actually not III./StG1 but 3./StG 1 of the I/StG 1 ( former I./StG 160 ) and also Dornier Do-17s of the 9/KG 3. III./StG 1 did not exist until 9 July 1940 when it was formed at Falaise. The attack was carried out taking off from the Elbląg airfield where the I./StG 1 was moved to temporarily. Later the unit was moved to Gryźliny airfield near Olsztyn. If you ask about the war in the air, the answer is ... nobody. There wasn't any air defence of the bridges in Tczew by the Polish AF. The only squdrons that could participate in the defence would be the III/4 FS of the 4 Regiment based in Toruń and being attached to the Army "Pomorze" because Tczew was just located at the operational area of the Army. The III/4 FS was equippped with 21 PZL P.11c of the 141 and 142 FS and was moved to a village airfield Markowo near Toruń on 31st August 1939.

The Lublin R-XIIIC,D and PZL 23 Karaś of the 42, 43 and 46 Recce Squadrons don't count IMHO.

Similar: the Thorneycroft Seaplane Lighter was a 58ft flat-bottomed barge towed by another vessel. They would get up to a certain speed, then with the RNAS Sopwith Camel 2F.1 engine revved up, they would let it rip and hope it made it into the sky! The purpose was to extend the range of the aircraft and they could then be used to intercept enemy Zeppelin bombers. The pilot would then have to ditch the aircraft and await a rescue.

Frightful mission. I imagine that these were not new but used up airplanes. Then to ditch, even in midsummer into cold water and wait to be picked up.

Captain :- "Absolutely my dear chap !"
Pilot :- "And then, given that I survive the resultant huge fireball, I'm to descend in a gentle spiral dive, and then land a biplane in the sea ?"
Captain :- "That's about the size of it, Bigglesworth, old fruit".
Pilot :- "F**k off !!"
