First of all I would remove all the paint from the model. Because the model was assembled quite long ago there shouldn't be a trouble of detaching of the cockpit canopy for instance. Undoubtedly it requires some of touch in order to get the proper lucency. Also the fuselage area of the cockpit may need to be cleaned and it seems that many other details too. But where there's a will, there's a way. IMHO.
