Damn. The Eagles Nest is burning down. Police suspect arson. Such a shame this historical place is destroyed. I'm so glad I have had the opportunity to visit it on many occasions.

I didn't think anything was left after WW2?
There is a lot left in Germany from then.

The Eagles Nest has been open for tourism since the 1950s. I've been several times since the 1980. Just took my kids there last year.

So parts were moved elsewhere? I seemed to recall that the main building had been demolished close to VE Day and that only a lesser building stood by the end of WW2. If parts had moved elsewhere then I guess it was rebuilt?

Wiki: The Berghof was damaged by a British air raid shortly before the end of the war and subsequently set on fire by the remaining members of the local SS. In 1952, the Free State of Bavaria had the ruins demolished.

The Berghof and Eagles Nest are two different places. The Eagles Nest was not demolished. It remained until yesterday.

You are speaking of the Berghof. His actual residence. The Berghof was blown up in 1952. All that remains of it are the foundation, which you can find in the woods.

The police have released photos of it this morning.

Another blow against fascism!
Easy to fight an enemy that's already defeated.
Well if you see the advance of the right wing parties around the world, then I guess not. The nazi movement was defeated, but other fascist movements are alive and kicking.

German authorities said he is a 33-year-old man from Berlin – more than 460 miles north of the "Eagle's Nest."
The man, while in custody, was evaluated by a psychiatric expert, who diagnosed him with an undisclosed mental illness. Due to this, the local public prosecutor's office was able to petition successfully to place him in a psychiatric hospital, police explained.
He is still being charged with arson.

Nazis were NOT Right Wing. They were Socialists, the exact opposite of Right Wing. They were just a tad Right of Communists.

lol

And you are so far from the truth. Please learn the actual history. They were socialist in name only. Fascists and Nationalists are on the far right spectrum. They put socialism in the name to attract the workers, but socialism and communism on the far left were enemies of the Nazis.

The narrative you are preaching is wrong simply because of a buzz word.

Fact is the Nazis were Far Right!

The Nazis were fascist, not socialist, though they intentionally included "Socialist" in their party's name for strategic political propaganda.

Key Facts About Nazi Ideology and Actions
    • Fascist Political Alignment: Nazism (National Socialism) is categorized by historians as a far-right, ultranationalist, and totalising form of fascism.
    • Rejection of Socialism and Communism: From its inception, the Nazi Party vehemently opposed Marxist socialism, communism, and trade unions. Leftist politicians, trade union leaders, and communists were among the very first people arrested and sent to concentration camps like Dachau

The idea that the Nazis were "socialist" in the United States is a persistent political argument and talking point. When people in the U.S. encounter or repeat this claim, it typically stems from a mix of literal interpretations, Cold War politics, and misinformation stemming from ideological framing:
    • The Party's Name: The full name of the Nazi party was the National Socialist German Workers' Party(NSDAP). Critics and political commentators often point to the word "socialist" in the title as a literal description, though historians note the term was used largely as a populist rebranding tactic in the 1920s to draw working-class voters away from actual communist and socialist movements.
    • Cold War "Totalitarianism" Theory: In the post-World War II and Cold War eras, American and Western scholars (such as Hannah Arendt and Zbigniew Brzezinski) popularized the concept of "totalitarianism". This framework grouped Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union together by emphasizing their shared authoritarian methods, state control, and mass surveillance, which over time blurred the lines between far-right fascism and left-wing communism in public discourse.
    • State Control vs. Free-Market Capitalism: The Nazi regime exercised massive state direction over the German economy, dictated production quotas, and implemented welfare programs (such as the National Socialist People's Welfare), leading some to label it a form of state socialism. However, the Nazis did not abolish private property or corporate ownership; major private industries (such as Krupp and Siemens) remained intact, and the regime actually privatized various state services and violently suppressed independent trade unions, socialists, and communists.
    • Modern Political Rhetoric: In contemporary American politics, characterizing the Nazis as socialists is frequently used as a rhetorical weapon by conservative commentators and politicians to link modern progressive or democratic-socialist policies on the American left to totalitarianism.
    • Culture-War Messaging: In contemporary American and Western politics, conservative commentators and politicians frequently invoke the "Nazis were socialists" argument as a rhetorical weapon against modern center-left policies, social welfare programs, or democratic socialism.

As a freedom loving American, I oppose totalitarianism in whatever form it takes- communism, fascism, islamism, etc.
Any party or movement which advocates violence to achieve it's political goals, supresses the speech of it's opponents, and uses the apparatus of State to punish it's political rivals is a no go with me.

As you should…

Extreme left and right both suck.

There is some irony with current events, but alas forum rules… lol
