accounts state that he did not bale out) after being shot down by 609 Sqdn. 40 km SW of the Isle of Wight
and came down in the Channel; not seen again and believed to have been dragged under by his parachute or
gone under with his plane, a Bf 109 E-4 (Black < - + -). 01.08.44 officially still listed as MIA. Credited
with 168 combat missions and 56 air victories. Wick is acclaimed not only for his leadership and scoring
success, but for his extraordinary rise from Leutnant to Major is just a year. He was the first
Eichenlaubträger killed in the war and the Luftwaffe's highest scoring fighter pilot at the time of his death.
