Also note the black spots on the wing leading edge are just painted on, those weren't gun ports. No guns were mounted at first.

The conclusion based on various documents dug up by members if the group show It was never formally adopted by the Military. The name does appear in a couple early NAA print advertisements but it never stuck. The A-36 is a Mustang.

I mean a lot of these stock pictures were used in many books. So if perhaps a copied mistake is the origen of the legend name.

What's this? Are you just referring to the actual gun?

The early P-51 was armed with two .50MGs in the lower engine cowling, often referred to as "cheek guns".

The prototype didn't have them mounted, so the cowling was "clean".
