When the danger that the Communists took control in China was evident the American perception of French activities in Indochina changed radically: France ceased to be an unpleasant colonial power to become a strong ally in the fight against communism. US aid would come eventually.

For the Armée de l'Air This change meant the possibility of sending fighters to Southeast Asia US construction. The P-47D would have been ideal for Indochina but still needed in Europe where met a very important role in the first line of defense of France. As a result for deployment overseas were selected Bell P-63C Kingcobra: GC planes 1/5 "Vendée" and GC 2/5 "Ile de France" were landed in Saigon in July 1949. Those first two units of Kingcobra they were reinforced by the GC 2/6 "Normandie-Niemen" which took Saigon as a base and, in August 1950, by the GC 3/6 "Roussillon" and GM 1/9 “Limuosin” stationed in Hanoi.
the Kingcobra (called "Kings" by their French crews) were quite effective, but require fairly well prepared slopes and bomb load was still insufficient. Moreover, the Armée de l'Air still did not have the twin-engine bombers that were considered suitable for the type of operations required. Fortunately help was on the way and not just in the form of aircraft, but also funding, weapons and supplies, since the beginning of the Korean war had made America increase their support to the French in Indochina.

    this is my recreation
