Just to add my 2 cents, though EN398 was technically a Mk IX, it was one of the early ones converted from a Mk. V. In my opinion, this aircraft featured the cheese cutter IFF antenna wires from the tip of the horizontal stabs to the fuselage. If you look really close at the hi res pic posted above, I think you can see portions of the wire at the time this photo was taken.

Well spotted Andy. :thumbright::thumbright:

I actually remember this from my.build of EN398 many moons ago. The aircraft was passed on to Johnson after being used by 402 Squadron RCAF where it was coded AE-B. The discussion about the wires came up in the build thread.

Spring time?
lol , I read on some forum when i was searching the net for pictures of Johnson's plane before the group build started , i read that in an interview he stated that his symbol was green but they dismissed it because he was getting old and must have forgot or got confused about the colour , but i really dont think u would forget something like that myself .
I can understand the leaf being red when its a symbol for a Canadian pilot but as we all know he was british and would probly be pissed if he was called a canadian , just like calling an aussie a kiwi , lol , and maybe wanted a different colour because of that .
Also i think Tamiya would do their research before releasing any kits and make sure that it was all accurate to the time , but mistakes do happen .
His favourite colour could have been green , lol , ya never know .
It sure would be nice if the photos back then had colour , save a lot of confusion and assumptions.
If you zoom in on this pic even thou its blurry the symbol dosent seem to be reddish at all and looks more green to me.

Started abit of the weathering last night , probly start doing some chipping today , gota find a nice aluminium colour to do it with and then start with the oils.
Bloody knocked over my jar of general purpose thinners i use to clean my airbrush last night and it splashed onto my engine covers , so ill have to repaint them . F#%^%k
