German Fighter Nomenclature

A few words about consistency in terms and nomenclature. Often, I will be referring to specific details about aircraft and engines from original documentation. I try to always use the same terms and style used in the reference material. This can vary but, I think it is accurate. Sometimes documentation can seem to be slightly incorrect but, if we are effectively quoting from old official source, we should be accurate to source. Of course, real errors or large differences will require explanation in text.
One point about the Bf109, it seems to me with my own experiences that the 109 was and is still referred to in German as the "Me-einhundertneun", or just "einhundertneun". Also, the "Me" sounds to me in UK English as "May". Certainly much easier in normal conversation than to say "Bayerische Flugzeugwerke 109". Of course, in common use, most aircraft have abreviated or slang nicknames. I recall reading a German Ace pilot's book where he says he referred to his aircraft as "crates"!

Cheers

Eng
Funny, your last sentence.
I remember watching "The Longest Day" the 1962 Zanuck movie.

One of the German Generals is arguing on the phone with (I Guess) the ranking Luftwaffe Pilot in Normandy.
He complains to the general that all he has at his disposal is one other pilot and "Two Crates".
I always wondered if that was an overtly Hollywood Mistake.
It would seem not. :)

Probably a hand me down from the Great War.
Could be, the term has been around for quite a while.

I heard it alot when I was kid, from the guys when they were having conversations and they were all pilots from WWII and Korea, plus my Uncle Bill, who was at the time, flying in Viet Nam.

Bf 108 ('civilian' machine) preceedes the 109, the 110 (2-engined heavy fighter) is the next.
Fw 189 is a 2-engined recon, the Fw 191 is a 2-engine bomber. The Fw 187 precedes both those and the 190.
To me it is just a coincidence the numbers used were the same 3.

P-51, P-47, P-38 were not company designations, but USAAC ones.
But what about Fw 200? Didn't it predated at least the 190? To me, the Condor (or Kondor) always had Belén odd in the number.

Kurt Tank was working on a fighter project before the Kondor, so 8-190 was allocated to the Fw190 before 8-200 was allocated to the Fw200.
So, if understood well, Kurt Tank was working in a fighter project, the very onset for the Fw 190 but it wasn´t necessarily in its "final" prototype that fly in 1939 before he started the project for Fw 200, whose first prototype flew in 1937?

A lengthy development that of project 8-190.

I believe that the RLM controlled the issue of the 3 digit blocks to the various manufacturers as well so that you could not have, for example, a Ju88 and an He88. All of the numbers are unique with a very few exceptions. The 109 and 190 numbers are purely coincidence.

EDIT: on a side note, the numbers used by the manufacturers were not always used chronologically. Kurt Tank (Ta) first used the 154, then the 153, and finally the 152.

I had thought the same but GrauGeist blew that theory away in post 12.

My assumption was based on the numbering of the LW manuals - eg

D.(Luft)T.2052 for the Ju 52

D.(Luft) T.2109 for the Bf 109

D.(Luft)T.2196 for the Ar 196

etc

I do have to agree and disagree with GrauGeist's post 14 however. In some original German documents, I noticed many times, no spacing between the prefix and the numerals, (i.e.: Ju87, StG44, BK3,7 and so on) and then sometimes there appeared to be a space.
In all the small collection of LW manuals I have the the LW used a space between the manufacturer and the number and again between the number and the model designation - Bf 109 G6/U4 - not Bf109G6/U4. Obviously he has a better collection than I do but maybe the difference is LW vs manufacturer?

The spacing could have been the way the paperwork was written at the time, too.

One thing that is a constant, is the hyphen that separates a variant by sub type, like Ju88C-4 or Me262A-1a.

The spacing between the manufacturer's prefix is perhaps one of those things that no one payed attention to at the time, so in the end, I suppose there's really no right or wrong way.

As it is, I don't have my books or computers (still), but here's screenshot of a Focke-Wolfe drawing of V13 for the Fw190.

Note the text in the upper left corner:
Screenshot_2022-01-17-16-46-45.png

Now take a look at the upper right text on a Messerschmitt drawing for the Bf109's canopy:

A few words about consistency in terms and nomenclature. Often, I will be referring to specific details about aircraft and engines from original documentation.

This is true, but as demonstrated with the Bf 109, the manufacturer was not super strict when it came to its own nomenclature surrounding the type. When writing professionally, I tend to go with the most widely accepted form of a designation and stick to national standards that are used in publications, such as "R.101" and "G.50" -note the period, in use to designate British and Italian aircraft, "Ki-43", "La-5FN" and "P-47", hyphen for Japanese, USSR and US aircraft and of course no hyphen or period for German. As I mentioned though, consistency is the key. From a university perspective, reference material cited in a research document has to be peer reviewed, so that limits what can be used.

One point about the Bf109,

The problem with Messerschmitt is the lack of standardisation within and out with the company, so it's best to pick one and stick with it. I'm sure no one should criticise if an author chooses to use Me 109 instead of Bf 109.

A query on that. Given I have never had an education on how the LW did their version of block numbers can you please break these down for the benefit of those under educated like me.

The E-B and E-N are a combination that I had never noticed before (which probably means my brain was not switched on at the time)

I suspect you probably got 100% with that line

For one psych paper I did a comparison of the top five "experts" in the field and got an A+
My paper basically went
on the subject of x author a says black is black but author b says black is white and c, d and e say different shades of grey
on the subject of y author b says black is black but author e says black is white and the others say different shades of grey
on the subject of z author c says black is black but author a says black is white and the others say different shades of grey
What I did not say was that, to me, the whole unit was an absolute crock of crap.
