That grey thing sticking out of the side of the cockpit was in fact the mount for the windmill that drove the drogue winch. It could be rotated so the windmill blades were parallel to the airflow when it wouldn't turn, turned through 90°, it would spin up to drive the winch. Seen here on this model on Modellingmadness Even though I've seen this photo often over the years, it appears in this instance the wind mill has been demounted from it's support. I hadn't noticed this before & have no idea why.

It would appear the windscreen/canopy was designed by the same person who did the Skua.
