No no no no no
C4 is not on the menu!!!!!!
I'm putting a new rebuilt engine in my ute, I am not gonna toss my computer.
I will FIXIT!

Heh. I'm lookin (gotta run to church here in a few, so it may be this afternoon before I can find anything), but so far not finding much on "Error 6". If you can take a screenshot (while the error is on-screen, hold down ALT and press "PrintScreen", then open up Word or Wordpad [NOT Notepad], right-click on the new page, and left-click on "Paste". Then click File, Save, and post here.

On a side note, I was having some issues with my computer at work, it was unable to get on the internet due to "trying to connect to a proxy server that is refusing connections", while all the other computers plugged in to the same hub were able to get online with no problems. I ended up having to do a system restore (Start-Programs-Accessories-SystemTools-SystemRestore) and going back to a date that I knew was good. Back up all of your personal data, ie photos, videos, music, documents, that you don't want to lose. Officially, System Restore only mucks with the system files, not other files...but I've had to reinstall programs that were installed after the restore date, and this time I lost a Word doc that I'd saved to my desktop. Weird. But its better to have everything backed up, first.

ETA: I'd forgo the C4 resolution. It tends to violate all sorts of local noise ordinances. I prefer the 16-pound sledgehammer response. Plus, its a good upper-body and cardiovascular workout!

I've gotten them all. error 797, error 6, and some "handle" thingy.
I've restored all the way back to January, nada, bubkiss.

I have two hard drives in it so I can transfer everything to the second one before I do anything drastic.
The laptop is a bit older, but there are no issues with IT, so I may just reload windows at some point.

Thanks to all of you who have looked in. I done most all of what has been suggested, unfortunately, nuthin has worked.
Bill.

Try going into Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista and Win7) in the Control Panel, check the box at the top to Show Updates, and start with the most recent and work your way back. This is time consuming, as a few of them will require reboots, but it may be a bad update that did you in (I have a computer at work with the same problem, running XP...system restore worked fine, then it asked for updates, and all of a sudden I can't get online again. Gonna have to go through one at a time and figger out which is the bad one). You can also insert a Windows install disk, and select "repair" when it asks you. The Repair option should be one of the first screens that loads when you boot from the disk. As always, back up your oh-holy-crap-I-cant-lose-that files/photos/videos (you know, like all your Hungarian goat porn and the video of Jan with those two Danish Siamese-twins)....Repair Installs should only touch the system files, but there are stories of people losing data. If you've got two drives, this should be no prob, just copy/paste from one to the other.

You've got my sympathy Bill - I've just spent four hours trying to print a simple form in 'Excel', without luck The logic of that programme is beyond me, as I'm b*gg*red if I can get it to work properly !!

Sounds like you hit what we call the "dll-hell". Many people seem tonhave this problem since the last few updates. To me it appears that microsoft did a major blunder with the last few. But having said this, it still could be that you modem just died.

Does it work when using a linux live cd? It will tell youm if you have any hardware problem. You could try and download ubuntu (Desktop | Ubuntu and burn the iso on a dvd. Then boot from that dvd. it should recognise all your hardware immediately.

Edit: scratch the last remark, this modem doesn't seem to be compatible with linux.

I know a lot of folks who swear by Ubuntu, but I've had much better luck with Parted Magic. Choosing option 2 on startup gives you the full GUI with kbd/mouse support, and the thing is chock full of useful apps!
