Today on the radio (BBC) it said that Iran had used Phantom jets against ISIS targets. Is that correct or possible? After all the years of conflict and embargoes how could they remain airworthy?

While Iran has newer types from Russia, China and France, they still have and operate their American aircraft left over from the days of the Shah.

These include: F-14, F4 and F5

Probably a customizable LED array in 1080P format. It will also show how much money is still owed on that particular airframe as well as give you the time, date, temperatue (in °F or °C), and probably pics of the pilot's girlfriend to boot. Costs $1 USD per "hit" and will hack your credit card for payment without letting you know it (the stealth part), just like Home Depot and Wallmart do.

If you are in bloody water with a Great White, knowing he is there won't change the outcome...

Well, the fact that Iran is now attacking ISIS along the eastern Iraqi frontier tells you how serious the situation has become regardless if Iran is using F4s, F-14s, MiG-29s or even their Su-25s...

Isis may find out that the Iranians can be ruthless too. On a different note a Jihadi wants to return to France because his IPad doesnt work......you couldnt make it up.

I saw an F4 at the FAA museum in the summer, they sure look dated.

The Phantom is a smoking beauty.........

Iran probably reverse-engineered some stuff, got some help/blueprints from Soviets/China and/or was able to get some replacement parts via a whitewashing chain of valid looking export customers.

Actually China was supposed to help them with a major avionics mod, I believe most sources say they are still operating 60 F-4s out of a batch of 225+. They also might be getting help covertly from Egypt and Turkey.

BTW - the Soviet Union doesn't exist anymore ;)

I used to work at a museum that wanted to acquire an F-4 and the hoops we had to jump through, even though the museum was originally after a British one - at that time there were still quite a few sitting about the country - most have been scrapped since. The US Dept of Defense were very specific about the purchasing and disposal of the aircraft the museum eventually got (a US Marine Corps F-4S), stating that the aircraft was under permanent loan from the United States and that it was not to be disposed of or dismantled without permission from the US Dept of Defense. This was during the 1990s. Iran was bandied about as a reason why these conditions were imposed.
