...and leave them there".

Very popular talking point in this country at the moment, especially amongst parents.

Kids dumped at McDonald's - Local News News - Cairns, QLD, Australia
Parents left children at McDonald's for two hours, police say | Herald Sun

A BABY only months old was one of three children dumped at Atherton McDonald's yesterday while their parents went drinking at a local pub.

Child Protection officers are investigating.

Atherton police were called to the restaurant at 4.30pm when staff became concerned about the welfare of the children who were left to fend for themselves.

They were unsupervised for almost two hours before police tracked down a family member, who had not been drinking, at a local pub to collect the children.

McDonald's franchise owner Greg Dowling, a former rugby league player who also writes a column for The Cairns Post, said the mother of the children came into the store, bought them some food then left.

"I was extremely concerned for the welfare of the small child," he said.

"It could not have been any older than nine months and the rest would not have been any older than 10 (years)."

Mr Dowling said yesterday was the first time he had contacted police about parents dumping children but it was common practice.

"This happens quite a bit, parents drop the kids off at the play equipment and leave,'' he said.

"I did something about it this time because I thought it was too much pressure for the kids to be looking after the baby."

Atherton police officer-in-charge Sen-Sgt Peter Howard said the children were in good health and were not distressed.

"We will refer the matter to the Mareeba District Child Protection Investigation Unit," he said. "There is no offence in leaving children at McDonalds but an investigation will be carried out to ensure that no ill treatment of the children is
going on."

The incident comes two weeks after Premier Anna Bligh announced a crackdown on parents dumping children while they went to casinos and pubs.

Under the proposed legislation, police will have greater powers and parents who abandon their children could face up to three years' jail.

I guess they don't want to pay the money for a babysitter.

Don't hire a babysitter, more money for drinking.

You have to have a license to drive a car.

You have to have a license to get married.

You have to have a license to go fishing.

But you can make a human life.............

Really? Hell, in Washington State, Child Protective Services will take your kid away from you if you leave him/her in the car while you step in to the quickie-mart for a package of gum.

That's a crime here as well Matt, but this McDonald's caper is a sort of loop-hole in the system. What surprises me in the story is that the parents returned to feed them and 'keep up appearances' and the Manager just watched. As a graduate of 'Burger University' he must be trained to deal with people like this? Besides isn't it the right of every restaurateur to refuse service if they see fit?

Once the parents returned, he should have 'tackled' them, being an ex-rugby league player!

Now if that was here in the states, some low life lawyer would end up suing McDonalds for failure to provide addequate child care.

Even more scary is some stupid jury would side with them.

No Graeme. In the states that would either be racism, bigotry, religious profiling or gay bashing. Choose your poison.

Oh come on Matt, it's not that bad. Some restaurants do have time limits, you can only stay for 30 min after you buy food. The 10 yr old kids could be legitimate customers, but the manager did the right thing calling the cops when they left the baby there.
