I agree. Very sad. Just watched the TV News here.

800 year old roof framing timbers catching fire because of construction has a way of spreading faster than even the best fire plans can account for. I have heard that the art works and relics in the church was all saved.

They rebuilt Rheims.
They rebuilt Koln.
They will rebuild Our Lady of Paris.

I know that they were trying to save the art, but didn't know they all saved it. I highly doubt that that is the case, seeing the size of the fire. And they can of course not save the old frescos.

I just hope this isn't either attributed to terrorism, or some kind of self-inflicted event (basically, a Reichstag fire of sorts -- set it on fire, then blame a convenient group)
They said it's caused by restoration works on the bell tower.

One fire fighter reported to be "gravely injured" on BBC. The towers and rose window have survived it bot everything else not made of stone are gone.

Going to be blunt here: I wouldn't rule out an attack.
Notre Dame has been the focus of several attempts, particularly in 2016, where two attempts were thwarted and again in 2017 but the person was stopped by Gendarmes.
And on this last Friday (12 April 2019), one of the three women arrested for one of the 2016 bombing attempts (mentioned above) Ines Madani, was sentenced to 8 years in prison.

The situation in Europe is really a mess and I truly hope it was just an accident caused by a spark that somehow ignited the wood as it's been speculated. Seriously. But I am not naive, either.

That being said, many of Europe's Cathedrals have been ravaged by war or disasters over the centuries and have been restored and there's no reason why Notre Dame can't be restored.

I've been watching the coverage, Marcel and it's heartbreaking to see how the fire spread so fast, although I'm not surprised, considering the age of the timbers.

If it was an accident by the workmen, then the guilt on the workman responsible is going to be a catastrophic burden to bear for the rest of their life. If it was intentional, it will be found out as some insurgents are stupid and some are clever, but they are always found out in the end.

We will have to wait and see what that actual cause was, as it's too soon for any facts to the cause to be known - and I did hear a great many of the artworks were managed to be saved, which is a bit of good news amongst the bad.
