Actually the A-36 guys wanted to call them Invaders.

But the attached article tries to address the Apache question.

Personally, I like the name "Invader" for the A-36. Different designation, different name. Even if that designation was budgetary legerdemain.
F-16 pilots call their ride "Vipers".
