By that time I don't think even the non-Kamikaze Japanese airplanes had radios. Saburao Saki said they took the radios out of their Zeros to lighten them, and that was well before Okinawa. They would need helmets because they still needed goggles. Damage to the canopy without goggles could render them unable to find their targets. Trying to wear goggles without helmets would likely cause the goggles to be blown off if the canopy was damaged. As for formating I don't think there was any. They generally seemed to fly in big gaggles and follow the herd.
