American Football players wear helmets and pads because of the larger average mass of a football player and the speeds generated during plays result in impacts that can be dangerous. Just look at the hard shot Damar Hamlin took last year - it nearly killed him.

Also the types of hitting and tackling in American football is much more conducive to severe injury. Remember there was a time when they did not wear pads or helmets. The sport was almost banned in 1905 because of the amounts of injuries and deaths.

The thought that NFL players are weak because they wear helmets and pads is highly inaccurate.
