George, reread that article for ya. (by David Francis, Scale Aviation Modeller, Vol.7 Issue 9, Sep 2001)
These are the main points/ problem areas noted:

-minimal moulded detail in cockpit, ejection seat a bit basic
-intakes correct but tricky to paint
-nose wheel bay needs careful alignment, fit is awkward
-nose looks too rounded and requires a little filler as larger than fueslage to which it is attached
-attachment points for underwing stores must be opened before cementing wing halves
-main u/c legs need slight trimming to sit correctly
-semi circular aerials (parts 46) must be added to tail for an Argentine aircraft (not mentioned in instructions)

overall opinion: Not a bad kit but not great (esp. in light of Hasegawa release). Does provide full range of stores however. Decal rating: 10/10

------------------------------------

Hope that's of use!

Terry, don't know off hand the exact differences between the B and C, but would suspect Geo is right in that it lies in the avionics, as with the later models. Will check one of my books that should have the diffs listed and get back to you on it.

Thanks Evan and Jan. they still look the same to me! I can only tell differences when one has a bl**dy great hump on its back !

Actually even that dosen't count Terry! Kiwi A-4Ks had almost empty avionics humps (I was told pilot's stowed their luggage in them!), which were later removed, and the Blue Angels used A-4Fs sans humps!

So they're all the same externally, apart from adding or deleting humps/noses/panels/pipes, pretty colours, camouflage, rust, dents, scrapes or any other anomaly .....

Decided to pick up this venerable old airfix kit today. The (sadly) long gone high water mark of the Dutch aircraft industry I guess. Looking to turn this into a military F.27 Troopship...for which I have a mighty nice decal sheet covering tons of different aircraft in multiple paint schemes from early to latter days of this beauty..and some great references as to what corrections to this kit might be made to turn it into an accurate F.27 Troopship. If I want to do it right a lot of work needs to be done it seems.

Nice one Jelmer!

Got that myself for a future RNZAF project.
If you are referring to an F27 websites plans on the Friendship, then have the very same already printed off to 1:72 scale. Quite a few corrections indeed ahead of us!

This kit is showing it's age...meaning a little extra work..even without corrections. Then come the needed correction, so ye this will be a long-term project I fear. I came across this Dutch site that had the different kits picked apart and measured against scale plans and such.

Yep, same site I think: scale drawings of the Airfix and Esci kits laid over how they 'should' look. (The Airfix kit is apparently more accurate atleast.)

...at least it's supposed to be the least not-accurate ;) The good part of the Esci kit though is that it has the lagers cargo door up front also (unlike the airfix kit) Oh well...a matter of research and references I guess. I know the Dutch military versions had many different layouts (smaller/bigger cargo doors, side-window layouts, short or long radar nose..including an F-104 nose cone for testing a new radar for the F-104.

...the first step I need to take though is shoot a message to Hornby...one of my nacelle halves is missing (came out of a sealed box and sealed plastic bag) One other nacelle part was came loose from the sprue...so I guess the other part came loose during packageing of the sprues) Should be OK though...I've had something similar before and Hornby replaced the part with no issues whatsoever.

Hope that works out ok Jelmer.
Quality control seems to be slipping alot these days - atleast 7 Revell kits I've bought have come without canopies, and others completely scratched.

Not sure of the mods/ configurations to the RNZAF F27s (we used the MK.120), need to do some research myself.

Nice! Always liked the sleek look of the Kate. Seeing this Japanese a/c reminded me of the fact that I have a D3A Val in the stash...which might also be an interesting contribution to the Carrier a/c GB

Got 2 started myself...may even add them in if there is time....
