Oh. Might explain the lack of train tracks. I was on the train between London and Edinburgh in 1977 and was super impressed by the miles of rock fences as we passed byDude that is the remains of the actual Hadrians wall !
There's all sorts of stuff around there from the Beaker people to industrial revolution remains like Rosedale Kilns. Just around the corner from the Cawthorn Roman Camp was Keldy Castle used by Canadian troops training in the build up to D Day, their "universal carriers" cut into the peat and trees re grew straight away leaving the track impressions still there, it was a chilling sight. they still looked fresh last time I was there 20 years ago.

Been a few years since I've been that way.
Me too, in 1979 I did the Lyke Wake Walk and my boss got us all lost, we were wandering around the "golf balls" at around 2 AM, must have happened all the time because we didnt see any security.
