Police on the island of Bornholm are asking forensic experts at the University of Copenhagen for help in identifying the age of a skull found there last week.

The skull was found by a local woman on Friday near some trees in an area that until 20 years ago was farmland.

Investigators said the skull was too weathered to be from someone who had died recently, but they could not determine whether the person died as a result of foul play. Detective inspector Leif Laursen said it was possible the skull dated back to the Second World War.

Bornholm was occupied both by German troops during the war and then by Russian troops after the rest of the country was liberated in 1945.

The area where the skull was found was reportedly used by troops from both countries, and German trenches have previously been uncovered nearby.
