Made some barbacoa for the first time ever. After eight hours in the cooker, it came out prefect. Served it with guacamole, Mexican rice, beans, and pico de gallo, on warm corn tortillas.

It looks spicy, but the green chiles and red crushed poblano peppers added a lot of flavor. I don't mind spicy, but I wanted my kids to be able to eat it. They enjoyed it very much. I gave baby the arrachera I had. It was only a pound (that stuff is so pricy), so it was perfect for her.

I'm fasting for blood work this morning (going to be leaving to get that done in an hour), but oddly, I've recently been wanting to try Wendy's, Burger King and McDonald's value sandwiches. Already had the first two, and today I'll be getting some McChickens and double cheese burgers and a large fry. I know that fast food probably isn't a great topic for here, but between it being cold and having fasted for at least 12 hours by the time I get my blood taken, I'm not willing to make something from scratch.

Also going to be having a Midwestern dairy delacy tomorrow: Superman ice cream, a Midwestern standard with no standard (it's blue, yellow and red colored ice cream of different flavors--I think Meijer's is vanilla, black cherry and blue moon--another Midwestern thing that I think tastes like vanilla marshmallows or just marshmallows).

And on the beverage front, I'm glad for my cheap, nifty coffee French press. Even regular Maxwell House ground coffee (medium roast is what I have) tastes pretty good and has a smokey aftertaste I like, though I have it with imitation sugar, various creams (Italian sweet cream, hazelnut, regular cream, I haven't tried milk yet and I wish I could still find Irish cream somewhere around here).

My son's driving back to LeJeune on Friday, so I spent the afternoon rolling pork tamales for his road-food. I ate a couple, they came out darned good if I do so allow. I'll be sending him with a couple/few chicken burritos and homemade guacamole that I'll be making Thursday, too. Maybe some triptip from tomorrow night as well.

If I have my way he won't have to spend a cent on food for his 1,500 mile drive!

I'll put up pics of the tritip if I have the presence of mind.

I just recently discovered Sonic burgers. They look like what you see in the ads and the price is much cheaper than the ripoffs at MickieD's or Wendy's. Wendy's isn't the same anyhow. They used to be nice square, juicy burgers but it's like they became Woke or something.

Sonic makes a good burger. Not as good as Whataburger, but good.

I used to love DQ over both, but the last few times there -- and different stores -- weren't as good as they used to be.

I find Whataburger highly overrated. Don't take me wrong, its not bad, it's a good burger, it's better than McDonalds, but it still just a fast food chain burger.

I think I just found it so underwhelming. Everyone in Texas hypes it up as the greatest burger on the planet, willing to fight anyone who says otherwise, and then I tried it and I'm like "That's it? Really? That's what the hype was about?" :D

I feel the same about In-n-Out. What I love about WB is that I don't have to ask for mustard on my burger, it comes stock.

In-N-Out became an icon mostly because it was a popular and inexpensive SoCal hangout for Friday night cruising back in the 70's and 80's.

As far as the best fast food burger goes, at least in California, Carl's Jr. beats out all other chains for flavor and consistency.
