My Uncle had a house built around his American Flyer collection (A.C. Gilbert - S gauge) and layout, complete with a downtown park sporting a Marklin Z gauge layout. That was an incredible sight for a youngster, the downside to that was "no touching!!"
Man would I love to Godzilla that! [KIDDING]. That was quite amazing, might be another reason to travel to Germany one day, that would be quite a day well spent.

It's only a couple of years old now. However, the Museum for Hamburgian History has had a large railroad layout in 1:32 scale since 1949, so if you ever return to 1960, it might be worth a visit
