Where has our Justice system not gone wrong?

Not even sure it's justice. It's more along the lines of legalism. It was a political system tried by the Chinese back in the 5th century. There were laws for everything. Ended up being a fiasco and the society collapsed. Not sure I like that precedent. Lot of people ended up dead for jaywalking, that sort of thing.

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers are seeking a reprieve for three Navy SEALs facing court-martial because one allegedly punched a suspect after arresting him for an ambush killing of U.S. contractors in Iraq.

Rather than accept a reprimand, the sailors chose to fight the charges in a military court. Their appeal greatly raises the stakes because a guilty finding could bring stiff punishment.

A letter that Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif, circulated in the House said prosecuting the three SEALs "seems to us to be an overreaction by the command."

One of the SEALs is accused of punching Ahmed Hashim Abed in the face after his September arrest; the others are accused of falsifying statements on the episode.

Hunter, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the men could face loss of rank, up to one year of confinement, a bad conduct discharge and forfeiture of a portion of their pay each month for up to a year.

About 20 lawmakers signed the letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, including House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio.

"The Navy SEALs could have been slapped on the wrist for this — unfairly then, too," Hunter said. "But they said, 'We want to let the facts be known." Prosecuting them is "baloney."

These guys brought in a known terrorist who killed a bunch of US contractors (most likely civilians, I'm guessing), thereby keeping this douchebag from killing MORE US civilians...and they're being taken to court? THIS IS EFFIN RIDICULOUS!!!! All that will come out of this is fewer prisoners, and more "shot while resisting arrest". They brought him in alive...give them medals for not outright scraggin his arse!

A second letter of support from members of Congress has gone out on behalf of three Navy SEALs charged with mistreating an Iraqi detainee.

The latest letter, written by U.S. Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., and signed by 40 of his Republican House colleagues, asks Army Maj. Gen. C.T. Cleveland, head of Special Operations Command Central, to drop all charges against the men.


"I find it infuriating and unconscionable that the three SEALs are now undergoing court martial as a result of those allegations," Burton said in an accompanying statement. "This sends a backwards message to our men and women in the military who are charged with carrying out dangerous missions and must often use aggressive force in dealing with al Qaeda and the Taliban."

Two North Carolina representatives, Howard Coble and Sue Myrick, signed the letter. No Virginians were among the signers.

A similar letter, written by U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., and signed by 32 other members of Congress, was sent to Defense Secretary Robert Gates.


Two of the SEALs were arraigned last week at Norfolk Naval Station. Petty Officer 2nd Class Matthew McCabe is charged with assault, dereliction of duty and making a false statement to an investigator. Petty Officer 1st Class Julio Huertas is charged with dereliction of duty, making a false statement and impeding the investigation.

They are scheduled to be court-martialed next month.

The third SEAL, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Keefe, is charged with dereliction of duty and making a false statement. He has not yet been arraigned.

All three are assigned to SEAL Team 10 at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

The detainee allegedly assaulted, Ahmed Hashim Abed, is thought to be linked to the 2004 convoy ambush in Fallujah, Iraq, in which four Blackwater contractors were killed, their bodies mutilated and hung from a bridge.

They were convicted?????? Okay, now I'm pissed.
