My first exposure to the Helldiver was in a DC comic. A pilot, who kept crashing onto his carrier, flew a Helldiver. His father was the carrier's skipper so I guessed it was okay.
Our hero, after failing to hit the enemy carrier, decided to crash on the bad guys flattop. Of course he makes a perfect landing. In desperation he fires his flare gun into the SB2C's engine. Plane explodes, the Japanese carrier explodes and our plucky pilot jumps overboard. After rescue he and his father are best buds. The plane was nicknamed "Liberty Bell 7". The Mercury space program was happening at the time the comic was published. Got my first Helldiver model soon after.
