I need to go over to a location north of Orlando to handle some personal financial business but noted that one front tire on the car was just about worn slap out, even showing cord along the outside. I decided I'd better have it replaced and made an appointment at the local Firestone dealer for 0800 today. Then I found out that it was going to get down to 48F last night and realized that my plan to walk from the Firestone dealer to the local airport and just putter around there until the job was done had a flaw - it was going to be cold and uncomfortable. We have had some lovely days but of course it could not be one of those. I got up this morning and it was not 48F; it was 43F with a 10 plus knot wind blowing out of the NW. It was indeed a cold 1.5 mile walk to the airport and then I went looking for some place comfortable. I finally chose a car a friend of mine had parked there, he had given me the access code for his hangar and to the car. I finally realized the car would be getting warm in the Sun and eventually found the key to it, enabling me to listen to the radio. So I had a not too unpleasant but relatively unproductive few hours in the car. By the early afternoon, not having heard from Firestone, I walked back up there, but was picked up by a friend and given ride most of the way. I was not surprised to find that Firestone had pulled their usual trick and delayed completing the job until they could talk to me about:
1. Replacing the front brake pads. I had looked at them a couple of months ago and knew they had plenty of life left.
2. Replacing the brake fluid. I am planning to do that myself; in his hangar he has a suction device designed to handle that. I already borrowed it to do the job on my truck.
3. Replacing the rear tires, which have plenty of tread left but date from 2013 and old tires are not good. Told them No.
4. Replacing the wiper blades, apparently Just Because.
So after telling them No, No, No, and No they finished things after about an hour's work and I finally got the car back. This likely was my last trip to that outfit. Not only do the Pep Boys just do what you want and not delay it for other unneeded things they thought up, but their facility is across the street from the local branch of the Public Library, a pleasant place uncontaminated by the dregs of society, probably mainly so because of the large moat we have around our island.
