Well, my daughter's boyfriend had come over for another go at Buffalo Wings, the gateway drug for the rest of the Fighting Wings series of WW2 tabletop air combat games, after a tasty meal of pho, egg rolls and fried rice. We were wrapping up a thrilling but inconclusive one-on-one G-50 vs I-16 scenario, when he blurts out: "So, Mr. Boeser, I would like to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage."
I noted that she seems interested in him, he has a job, and as a lieutenant in the National Guard, he technically outranks me. I found no contraindications, so I gave him my blessing.

My son's mother suicided on 31 Dec 2020. I feel for you, and her family especially.

Suicide is a funny topic in much of Aus. Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) is a legal right in most states and anyone with a fatal illness that has less than 12 months to live can opt to use it if they meet all the requirements. One person we know is going to use it on St Pats day, next week. I fully support it for those in great pain or who are unable to feed/bath etc themselves. I further think believe that people whose family has a history of dementia should be able to put in their Advanced Health Directives that they should be given VAD when their dementia reaches a specific stage. I believe this because a person we knew was nothing but an angry vegetable for 15 years in a nursing home wasting her families and the taxpayers money. I know all her family have written into their AHDs that they should be given VAD at the point that they must be confined to a nursing home. My family has no such history but I have the same provision in my AHD even though anyone with dementia automatically fails the first requirement of the current laws because they will not be of sound mind when they reach that stage.
Children and young adults committing suicide is a whole different ballgame. Many recent suicides in Aus and the US and no doubt other countries is a result of AI telling them to commit suicide. To me there is only one way to stop AI doing that. The only thing the AI companies give a damn about is income so the penalty for any child committing suicide (or a mass killing, etc) should be a financial penalty so massive that will make them rewrite their software. In Aus we have state and federal penalty units that apply to certain fines and these are indexed to inflation. The commission of some offenses can result in civil or criminal proceedings that result in a fine. The fine amount is determined by the penalty unit value which changes over time. At present one federall penalty unit is $330 Aus.
To me the fastest way to stop AI and "social media" convincing people to commit suicide or mass murder is to fix into law a large penalty such as, for youth suicide, the software owner or social media owner pays a minimum penalty of say 100,000 penalty units (PU), which currently would be $ 33 million, plus compensation of the same value to the parents of the child/youth and gives the courts the ability to increase the penalty where the death is slow or otherwise horrific. For mass murder the penalties should be say 200,000PU per death and again 100,000 PU compensation to the families for each and every victim. How fast do you think AI owners would change their software if those penalties applied?

What cheered me up is that I finally am going to work a little less. Just 3 hours per week less, but gives my one day off every 2 weeks (I officially work 38h/w but of course a lot more in real life). I've been on the verge of burnout for most of the last 2 years. Still managed to hold it together, but I need a bit more room in my head for myself. Hopefully this will help.
