Finally got the call for eye surgery

Got the full text of the proposed contract changes this morning. Looks better than the 1st by a long shot. Was hoping for big improvement on retirement numbers, but wasn't there. Last MOU added, though, talks about a "possible" retirement incentive plan coming out during the life of the contract. Vote is tomorrow morning and should pass with ease.

Contract passed at about a 2.5 to 1 ratio. Quite a low vote turnout though...less than 2500 out of 5300 active members showed. Frustrating is there is a lot of grumbling about what the union accomplishes, but it's almost impossible to get the complainers to even show up for a monthly meeting. Prediction is that it's going to bite them hard at the next contract, as a huge amount of the active membership will have retired or be retiring by the next one.

Ahhh. Contract negotiations. My wife worked for the city. One year the offer was made. No big deal. It got voted down. People were livid! But if you choose not to vote, you give your power to those who do.

Yep, they grumble and complain loudly, but when you ask what their participation in the union is, they suddenly go silent. I'm not a huge union guy, but have been on both sides over the life of my career and been part of two different unions. Things have changed over the last 40+ years and I'm afraid that it hasn't been for the better on either side. I think a lot of it has come from the Ivy League philosophy of get in, make a quick buck and get out quick, jumping to the next thing. That has destroyed the loyalty of employees to companies and likewise from the company to it's employees. Growing up, one tended to be part of a company for a significant part of your career. My grandfather spend 47 years at one company, starting as the #3 employee, doing anything that needed to be done. Retired as plant manager with more than 1000 people working for him. Dad spent 38 years with a single company, and I've spent almost 36 years with this facility. I've worked with kids that are less than 30 years old and have been with 5 or more companies already, and didn't start working til they got out of school at 22 or 23 years old.

Had a visit from an Irish Air Corps AW139 today (nr. 275). I think it was just a medivac exercise, rather than a serious callout. They landed on a nearby football pitch.

Here they'd just say 'Slán Abhaile' (pronounced 'Slorn A-vail'), meaning 'safe home'.
The government telling me i paid too much tax last year, and they now owe me a nice little pile of cash !

Congrats... I've got three guys on my crew that are retiring before the end of the year. One is going sometime after 31July and before 31Aug. Got a fourth that may get forced into retiring this year due to medical reasons. If all four go, that will be 20% of the shift gone in less than 6 months.

The government didn't tell me, if I make too much money before I retire, they will claw my pension back. Had I known that, I would have retired in June or July the following year
