When the book was written, Hitler was not in power. By the time he was, Erich Marie Remarque was famous and living in Switzerland.
The Nazis banned him and his books - he was 'unpatriotic'.
Marcel, beyond all else, the relevance of this FILM to events today is overwhelming .. and back then the drones were balloons.
Treatment is a little 'interpretive' ... book starts 1916 .... film, last days. Film sets context for Nazis and Hitler in a manner the book does not - written in 1924. But Remarque would NOT object to the treatment, IMO.
I am unravelling heritage family paper work .... Grandad a battery Sgt Mj in Canadian artillery flying column - the duration. We see from Ukraine how effective mobile artillery can be. They did with horses - thro Pachendale.
Pictures ... family pictures .... what happens to them.

Watched the new version on Netflix, which seems to have little to do with the plot of the book (other than the character names) but is a GREAT WWI movie, absolutely awesome. The scene where they take the French trench, start gobbling down warm rations and stop when the earth starts to tremble. Totally awesome scene.
Then watched (on DVD) the 1930 version, had forgotten how gritty and real it was, especially for 1930. I recommend both versions, although perhaps not back to back like I did, you might get a tad depressed...
Complete the saga by watching "The War Lover" with Steve McQueen.Well, I just did a triple movie set.
1) Pearl Harbor (yes I know the drama and sadly overdone dialogue kinda sucked, but fast forward to the battle scenes and they are pretty good)
2) Battle of Britain. I love the dogfight scenes.
3) Memphis Belle. I it's not too bad and some interesting fuselage interior scenes along with the obligatory "actual" bombing scenes from arrival footage film bombing runs that most have seen many times.
No matter what, they were all entertaining.
I'd love to, but I can't find. If it's streaming, it's one I don't have, and my Blu-ray is giving me some issues. I'll see about finding the doc somewhere. Thanks for the tip tho.Complete the saga by watching "The War Lover" with Steve McQueen.

McQueen played a rotten SOB, an unlikable character through & through. The scenes in the B-17 returning to England, shot up and losing altitude come off as very realistic to me.
