I took it to be a variation on the "banality of evil" message. Basically showing the way that Rudolf Höss and his family were having essentially normal boring lives in a home in the "Zone of Interest" right next to the concentration camp where people were being murdered.

A surprisingly good movie. Well acted, well written, unique plot with some quirks, fair amount of humor, lots of shoot-em up, pokes fun at everyone in a somewhat low-key manor (for the most part).
