I hold whatever is unpainted. Most of the time with these, I leave them on the sprue while painting and up as needed, yes. There are those two tiny doors next to the main landing gear, which were difficult to attach. I needed the teezers for that.

I had to repaint the D3A1 from Bandai to match the date, first coat. Painting the white stripes is going to be challenging. A6M2s have first coat.

Depending on how close it is to the tail and tailplanes, you could maybe mask it with 3mm Tamiya masking tape (the thicker stretchy stuff) or similar.
