Finally started on two things for the IJN aircraft carrier decks with aircraft. One will be of the IJN Akgi carrier deck (The Doyusha kit) and the Sweet IJN carrier deck that will be IJN Hiryu. The hardest thing was finding the decals to put on the aircraft. The resin ones weren't as bad as I thought they might be. Still do have to build the A6M2bs for the Hiryu.

These are the Bandi D3A1s. I still have to put the B5N2s together. I did decide on two B5N2s from Hiryu and one D3A1, with two A6M2s. Again, lucky to have found the decals I need for them. The Akagi deck will only get one B6N2 and one D3A1.

72 or 48? Or something else?

The deck portion of Hiryu works out to be the exact length I had in mind.

The other concern was regarding the BI and BII which has been an argument that the experts can't agree on. However, I read that Dr. Hata had conducted interviews with survivors from Soryu and Hiryu, who stated that the carriers changed tail codes when Yamaguchi switched his flag to Hiryu. Other experts in the field say that's impossible. However, having read about IJN and IJA operations, we all know they were very unorthodox when it came to unit designations and aircraft colors (Saints save us). The latest publication by Stefan Draminski, Anatomy of the Ship: The Aircraft carrier Hiryu (2022) has the aircraft with the BI being the tail code at the time of Midway 1942. I have chosen to use it over BII. The MYK decals for the Hiryu and Soryu have based their information on this as well.

After the issue I had last year with the ROP decals that had mistakes when it came to the B5N2s, I always check their sources as to where they got that information. It would help if I could read Japanese :joycat:

Great post! Most of the IJN and IJA paint schemes were unknown to me before I started lurking here. This stuff is fascinating. I can appreciate that the actual markings from the time can be "murky".
Me as well. I have learned a lot here. I thought I was knowledgeable on the subject, but was I ever wrong. I learn something knew all of the time. The IJAAF colors are all over the place, but they do look nice though.

Finally doing some modelmaking tonight!

Playing with the new Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colour (still to be cleaned up in pics), and doing repairs on some old damaged kits, including a Revell (ex-Matchbox) 1:72 Fairey Swordfish. Also continuing with an Airfix 1:72 Jet Provost T.3 I started about 2 years ago.
