Today I was home from work feeling a bit under the weather and I spent time on the landing gear. Having measured out the remaining components and determined that the kit parts are reasonably accurate, I convinced myself not to fix the 3mm length discrepancy for two reasons. First, the drawings I have show the dimensions in the "no load" condition, that is, without the weight of the aircraft compressing everything. Secondly, taking a close look at the parts, I determined that it would have been a difficult feat to modify the struts. In the loaded condition, to the best of my determination, there would have been only 1mm to add somewhere and I figured this would not be worth the effort. I therefore pressed on with assembling the landing gear.

Here's what I had to deal with. The Revell kit offers a very detailed myriad of parts as you can see by the below pic of the parts needed for just one assembly.

The above does not include the hydraulic actuator and oil tank, which I intend to install at a later date. The below pics show various views of all of these parts assembled and glued.

One thing the kit did not provide, unfortunately, is the door guides that attache to the front of the compression struts. These are very obvious misses and I think I'll try scratch building some. Apart from that, everything went together reasonably well I'm happy to say. One issue that I discovered in time was that the instructions show the mud guard supports 180 degrees from the correct position. I had already glued these together and had them installed in the struts when I noticed something fishy. Fortunately, the Tamiya Extra Thin glue had not yet set and I was able to pull it all apart and correct it.

Now with both assemblies complete, these will get a coat of Alclad Dull Aluminum and then the hydraulic actuator and oil tank will be installed within the gear assembly. All this needs to be done before the other half of the nacelle goes in as everything fits quite snugly.

Thanks everyone.

nice work Andy, Tamiya's Mossie undercart looks very similar in make up of parts, a little kit all of its own !

Yes, and Tamiya provides the gear door guides, I believe. Unfortunately, Revell doesn't so I had to make my own as shown in the below pics:

Firstly, with a bit of measuring and some trial and error fitting, I created the following template around which the copper wire would be bent:

The formed wire was then shaped further and CA glued to the struts along with two other small pieces. Parts of the wire were flattened at the connection points. One done and one to go:

Both done:

...and then painted with Alclad Aluminum. I also added the small black softeners for the gear door retraction wire.

Thanks for checking in guys,

Thanks guys. Let's hope smashing is not what happens to this one Bill. I remember getting nearly done with my Me 410 with all the details I put in and then dropping the damn thing on the floor.

Cheers boys.

Moving along, I finished the oil tanks today and installed them in place. First of all, of course I couldn't leave the kit parts as is. They were missing the filler cap and dipstick and the bottom fittings were too small, so I changed them out and added hoses to the firewall. Pic below has the kit part on the right and modified one the left.

And here are both tanks finished and all grimed up

Installed in the landing gear assembly. Note also that I did find that I had to extend the landing gear as part of it was fouling the supercharger intake. The extensions were made of plastic tube and can be seen at the top of the struts. Note also the added brake line.

Getting there. I hope to get the wings on this weekend, after which it won't be long until the paint gets squirted on. Thanks for looking in.
