From research in building a Tamiya P-47D razorback as a 348FG in New Guinea I have seen tail coded planes up to D-11 with the FULL width cowl flaps. My research of P-47 photos by tail codes show D-15 is when the staggered cowl flaps appear. The question if the change is related to RE and RA build planes. I always put my faith in WW2 era photographs than artist interpretations in popular books!
